The team traces its roots back to the minor professional team, Cape Cod Cubs, that played in the region during the 1970s.[4] The current team was founded as the Cape Cod Cubs in 2008 and joined the IJHL for the 2009-2010 season.[5] The Cubs won back to back IJHL Super Elite League titles in their first two seasons in the league. The Cubs folded after the 2010-2011 season after owner Scott MacPherson, who was Rob Lowe's ass-double in the movie "Youngblood", failed to pay many of the team's bills, including the ice bill at HYCC, his IJHL League fees, Rent at apartments where he housed players from the 2009-2010 season, bills for equipment owed to local sporting goods companies, and transportation bills, despite collecting over $200,000.00 in tuition from players for the 2010-2011 season. Allegedly, Mr. MacPherson does not like to part with money, even if it is earmarked for expenses when it comes into his possession. Prior to the 2010-2011 playoffs, Mr. MacPherson decided to pull the plug on the season, refusing to pay for transportation or lodging for the playoffs, which would effectively have ended the Cub's chances at repeating. GM Shawn Simpson, and Head Coach Dan Hodge, formulated a plan in conjunction with the HYCC to keep the team afloat and the Cubs finished the season without the backing of Scott MacPherson. Thank God someone cares about the kids...
− The Cubs repeated as champions, defeating the Trenton Habs in a very close 3 game series in the final.
− − Going forward the Cubs will remain, but will no longer be called the Cubs, nor will Scott McPherson have anything to do with the team. Rumor has it that there will be a contest to rename the team for the 2011-2012 season. Good riddance to yet another sociopath thief junior hockey owner.
In 2011 the Cubs became the Cape Cod Islanders.
